2019 was another great year for comic speculation and investment. As recent history will show, comic values seem to be tied to character motion picture exposure. Captain marvel joined the marvel Cinematic universe (MCU) early in the year and helped propel end game to record-breaking numbers. Disney+ was introduced along with the concept that the MCU will extend into series type offerings. along with motion pictures driving gains on several characters provided for phase IV. The X-Men are hopefully done being mutated beyond repair over at Fox, and the best DC motion picture to come out just happened to be Shazam! What does 2020 hold for speculators and the market?
*Warning: The odds on this stuff actually panning out is unknown. consider this a lot more carnival game than science.
We have already seen the rise of the Eternals on the market. The Eternals #1 has seen consistent growth from the announcement of the movie, until now. Can we expect to see another jump upon release? That seems to be the lingering question for fans. Collectors are expecting The Eternals to become the next Guardians of the Galaxy, but I don’t know if marvel can pull off that type of magic on relatively unknown characters twice in a row. This must be a comic to enjoy in 2020. We are also left with the lingering question of how this will affect the future of the MCU.
Sony is continuing to spice things up with their superhero universe (the Spider-Less-verse, or whatever) with the recent announcements surrounding a Venom sequel, a Madame web solo project, and of course the coming of Morbius. Is 2020 the year it will all happen for Jared Leto? Can he pull off a seemingly defunct concept of this character without Spider-Man? prices for outstanding Spider-Man #101 have had a blood-lust for value and are only going to increase moving to the release of Morbius.
DC is going to try and take a tangent, from the recent Aquaman, with the release of female-led movies: Birds of Prey and Wonder woman 1984 next year. We will see if the market is reactionary to these motion pictures or if we will see collectors focus on the upcoming Batman reboot along with the Black Adam motion picture announced for 2021. Of all the motion picture studios who influence comic values, DC has not done its books any favors.
There is a obvious lull happening for some of the a lot more famous marvel characters from the past several years. Black Panther has no future motion picture set in stone and we have a two-year gap until the next Dr. Strange. We will also have the arrival of Shang-Chi, who may be the greatest beneficiary of a marvel motion picture announcement ever. I remember a time when copies of marvel special edition #15 were affordable. now may be the time to focus far enough in the future to make an impact. beyond phase IV, where are the logical pathways for marvel to go?
My greatest hope for 2020 is a tangible improvement in the quality of villains used in all the movies. Writers and directors need to get creative with bad people and make them matter. Thanos was the closest we got to a “complete” character and it took 2 motion pictures and time travel to it pull off. I hope we do not continue to see a cop-out equal-but-opposite type villain that has been plaguing superhero motion pictures for the past 10 years. give me something new and out of the box. After all, it is 2020.
