Influences. all of us have them, doesn’t matter if you’re a writer, an artist, a football player, whatever. sometimes we’re influenced on purpose, as well as other times just with exposure.

As a writer, I have more influences that I can count. Some momentary, others come from the long impact or some from purposeful study. You can name some as well as others, well, they just pop up.

This week I’m going to tell you about an influence that came into my life during one of my most “Comics….I’ve rediscovered my like for comics!” stages. The year was 1984. I was married, had a one-year old son, a routine task as well as discovered that I likewise had time to begin reading comic books again.

It had been a few years since I had checked out comic books with passion. I might’ve chosen up an problem or two, however nothing serious since high school. The comic book landscape had altered a bit since I was last serious about them. There were more of them for one thing, as well as there was the birth of the direct market in addition to Independent publishers. It was no longer just marvel as well as DC Comic putting out 20 books a month.

Naturally, I wandered back to marvel Comics as well as DC Comics. This was assisted by ordering with Westfield Comics. I discovered with them I was able to order just about any type of comic book I wanted, at a discount rate as well as they would show up at my front door in perfect condition. I’m not the smartest guy in the world, however even a knuckle dragger like me understands that was a heck of a deal.

Blue Devil #1

One of the comic books, new comic books, that I tried was Blue Devil #1 from DC Comics. I desired something that looked great as well as likewise looked to be….fun. fun like Spider-Man utilized to be during the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko/John Romita era. Blue Devil seemed to have that just from the bit blurbs that I had checked out in the restricted comic book printed press of the day.

Gary Cohn

Dan Mishkin

Blue Devil was written by two writers I had never heard of, Gary Cohn as well as Dan Mishkin, as well as it was drawn by an artist that I had never truly heard of either, Paris Cullins. The book was about a Hollywood stuntman that, while making a movie, got mistaken for a genuine demon as well as was melded/cursed/stuck in the cleverly designed stunt/SFX Blue Devil fit that he was wearing. He/it ended up being one. Dan Cassidy’s persona wasn’t changed, which was excellent since he was a fun loving action kinda guy. Blue Devil had a truly great supporting cast, as well as that is always key when starting a new character or even having an established one.

Paris Cullins

The art on the book was open, organic as well as was packed with fluid motion. It took to colors truly well as well as there was a sense of fun in the pencils of Paris Cullins, just like there was with artists like Steve Ditko, John Romita as well as Ernie Colon. The composing was where the genuine treat was served. Gary Cohn as well as Dan Mishkin were able to catch the trick to any type of truly great character – likability! You not only liked Dan Cassidy-stunt man, you like him as Blue Devil as well. I cannot stress exactly how extremely important that is.

Part of the blessing of reading comic books pre-internet was the truth you didn’t truly have any type of facts on the characters, and the innovative team. The only thing you had to judge them on was what you were reading. The method it should be. These guys delivered.

Blue Devil

The Blue Devil was fun, serious, as well as action packed. the very best part was that it was not slapstick. It didn’t take itself as well serious as well as the action was the perfect amount to go with character depth. let me state here, that when most movie critics state that a work doesn’t “take itself as well serious” it’s almost an insult, as well as I, by no means, hope you believe that’s what I meant. just the reverse. When a story doesn’t take itself as well serious, that is a high compliment in storytelling. It means the imagination is free streaming as well as not constipated like as well many comic books today. The story as well as the characters are able to breathe freely as well as aren’t made to hold their breath.

Gary Cohn as well as Dan Mishkin, together with Paris Cullins, provided us fresh air.

Blue Devil Making Comics Fun!

Paris Cullins left the book around problem #6. I missed him, however continued to comply with him in other books that he would work on. Cohn as well as Mishkin always entertained me with Blue Devil, as well as it’s one of the comic book series that I have a total collection on. (Daredevil as well as The Avengers being the others) With Blue Devil, I always felt that Dan as well as Gary were providing me whatever that Ienjoyed in comics that had come before with Spider-Man as well as Iron guy yet the newness of the present. It truly was a perfect blend. As time went on as well as Blue Devil was put into the hands of others as well as his storylines ended up being more…complicated…it lost me as a reader. A darkness that wasn’t needed with the character was added since darkness is easier to writer than likable, just as comedy is harder than drama.

Gary Cohn as well as Dan Mishkin ended up being influences of mine in 1984. I’d like to believe that it shows in my composing of the last 28 years as well as even today as I compose Wynonna Earp. It may not be their precise footsteps I’m walking in, however they in shape close sufficient to show me the path.

Thank you Gary, Dan as well as Paris.
